What if instead of cash, an Internet gaming site offers a prize or the chance to play live poker in Vegas?

Subject: question for legal at PokerPulse

Would it be illegal in the United Sates to operate a poker website in which people payed to be in Texas Hold'em tournaments that awarded prizes instead of cash?

If the answer is yes, then, would it be illegal to have a poker website that hosted Hold'em tournaments (where players pay $20 to play) and winners are given seats at a bigger real life tournament in Vegas, but no prizes or cash?

Thanks,

B.

Hello B.,

The question now is will North Dakota be the first U.S. state to legalize and regulate Internet poker? Maybe. A new bill introduced there may fly. Search the terms, 'North Dakota', anywhere at PokerPulse.com and you'll find some links that explain how it would operate. From our reading on the subject of Internet gambling in the U.S., it doesn't seem to matter whether the winnings are prizes or cash or a chance to play at Vegas. See our U.S. gaming law forum here.

Note: The North Dakota bill did not succeed but Antigua's victory at the WTO could change U.S. policy regarding e-gaming considerably. More here.
